The first match of the new season was fished at Chiselhampton on Sunday 18/6/17 for the John Hemmings Cup. 11 anglers fished the match from 7.30am to 12.30pm. They were greeted by the hottest day of the year - bright sunny conditions may be good for sunbathing but the fish tend to shy away into the relative safety of the weeds and the shadows. As a result of this and the abundance of natural food in the river at this time of year very few fish were caught after 10am and the winning weights were relatively low as a result. The match was won by Kevin Smith with 2lb 13oz from peg 21, second was Julian Rayment with 2lb 9oz from peg 6, third was Tony Coffin with 2lb 7oz from peg 10 and fourth was Geoff Ring with 1lb 10oz from peg 14. The winning weight was a mixed bag of around 40 small fish. These were predominantly chub with several roach, perch, gudgeon, bleak and a solitary dace. The winning method was pole fished maggot.
